Buff and recoat hardwood floors FAQs
Buff and recoat vs full refinishing—how do I choose?
Choose recoat when the finish still covers the wood and you mainly need sheen and protection restored. Choose full refinishing when finish is gone in spots, color needs to change, or deep damage requires sanding into the wood. If you are unsure, an on-site look prevents paying for a full sand when a maintenance recoat would have been enough—or the reverse.
Can buff and recoat fix deep scratches?
Deep gouges and worn-through areas will not fully disappear with a recoat. Those spots may need board repair or full sanding. Recoat is excellent for dull, lightly scuffed finish that is still continuous—not for rebuilding missing wood.
How long before I can walk on recoated floors?
Light traffic timing depends on the finish system and conditions in the home. We provide specific guidance for walk-on and furniture return so the new coat is not damaged early. Following cure instructions is the easiest way to protect your investment.
Will a recoat change my floor color?
Recoat is primarily about protection and sheen. Major color changes typically require sanding and restaining as part of a full hardwood floor refinishing project.
How often should hardwood floors be recoated?
It depends on traffic, pets, and maintenance. Many homes benefit from periodic recoats between full refinishing cycles to keep the wear layer protected. Waiting until bare wood shows in traffic lanes usually means you have moved past recoat territory into full refinishing.
